October 09, 2004: Trip to the Lake District

Last week we had a 5-day holiday in the Lake District, staying at very well equipped & comfortable log cabin in Ambleside. This was supposed to be a biking holiday but because of my broken hand, it became a walking holiday.

It rained pretty much all the time, but I still found it to be a beautiful & inspiring place. On a walk around Rydal Water I was able to stand with my feet in the lake whilst gazing at the perfect reflection of the grassy fell in front of me. As I took a deep breath of the fresh clean air I felt dwarfed by this magnificent Earth we live on. I really should get out of London & appreciate this place some more.

If you want to walk around the area - which I fully recommend you do - use the Hallewell pocket books. Written by one guy who keeps walking the area, each book contains around 24 easy to follow, graded & mapped guides of the area. For only £1.95 you can't go wrong.

Eating out: Maybe I don't really like Tapas, but I don't recommend Lucy 4's. Their other restaurant Lucy's On A Plate however looked very good, but was sadly full when we were there. Luigi's was quite good, but a little pricey. If you want a wholesome breakfast look no further than Scott's CafÈ at Waterhead. They do a fantastic Cumberland sausage & onion roll, possibly the best sausage I've ever had... mmmm yum!

We too stayed recently in Ambleside, lovely place, lovely weather, disappointing accommodation - BIRCH END - self catering accommodation in excess of £500 per week. Lovely location but VERY DAMP - black mould even inside wardrobes!! Decor from the 1960's - worst place in the area we have ever stayed in and owner doesn't want to know!!!!
